Menu item modifiers/quantity question

Hi,
For inventory purposes I have smoked salmon in grams.
I have added "Smoked Salmon" as an item (not a sale item, but is a stock item and a purchase item)
I added a menu item modifier, and under the inventory linked it to the smoked salmon and made quantity = 50 (for 50g portion)
However, when I close an order only 1 is removed from the physical inventory and not 50.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
